Drawing from Melbourne’s local environment, character and context, Bates Smart created a new workspace for Boston Consulting Group (BCG), giving the firm a local presence.

Housing various work settings including meeting rooms, focus rooms, a brainstorming room, the intention of the interior was to welcome consultants and overseas staff in the intermittent times they are in the space. Reaching across two floors of 101 Collins St, the workplace layout reflected the grid of the CBD streets, creating ‘neighbourhoods’ within the workplace.

“The design approach began by translating some of Melbourne’s distinctive characteristics into subtle design expressions, ranging from materiality selection, to textures and patterns, and artwork, thereby creating a truly local experience within the global BCG brand,” says Bates Smart Associate Director Grant Filipoff.

Using natural materials across the build to reflect the local environment, furniture and furnishings introduced softness and playfulness to contrast against the floor plate. Design Nation provided tables and stools which also reflected the use of natural materials and the natural environment through their use of timber finishes.
