Protecting Furniture Against the Elements

Maintenance is the key to keeping that outdoor furniture looking immaculate through rain, hail or shine. Contrary to what you might think, maintenance doesn’t necessarily mean hard work and these effortless tips will show you how to keep your furniture looking good.

  1. When buying furniture, check the joints closely for gaps and imperfections that may let moisture in. And remember to keep receipts for warranty purposes.
  2. Keep furniture clean. If dirty, a sponge, detergent and water is generally the best option but always check manufacturer’s instructions first. For built up grime, a pressure washer on a lower setting works best.
  3. Always invest in heavy duty, UV resistant furniture covers, especially if they can’t be stored indoors during winter.
  4. Wooden furniture should be regularly oiled or waxed. While metal varieties often need touch ups to the paint work. If the metal is looking rusty, consider one of the many rust-proofing options available from the local hardware store.
  5. Pack cushions and soft furnishings away during the colder months. If mould and mildew is an issue, use a solution made from a cup of bleach, 2 cups of detergent and 4.5 litres of water. Don’t forget to rinse and dry thoroughly before packing away.
