Capsule Coffee Quickly Becoming Number One

With the help of famous faces such as George Clooney, capsule coffee machines are quickly overriding the popularity of traditional espresso machines.

While capsule machines such as Nespresso comprised just two per cent of sales six years ago, they represent 44 per cent today.

This sudden rise in popularity has prompted big brands like Woolworths, Aldi and Big W to release their own low-cost versions of the appliance.

Woolworths claims that one of its Caffitaly machines sells approximately every 90 seconds.

Brendan Gray, head tea and coffee buyer for Woolworths, says these machines are filling the gap between those who drink instant coffee at home, and those that like to relax on comfortable cafe furniture and spend $3.50 for a latte.

“You can replicate a latte for 47c,” said Gray; plus, coffee drinkers like these machines because it’s easy and fast to make a coffee before heading off to work in the morning.

A recent study has estimated that by 2015, pod machines will increase to about 73 per cent of all coffee machine sales.
