Newcastle Quickly Becoming Hub for Foodies and Young Entrepreneurs

There has been a large influx of young food entrepreneurs coming to Newcastle with the hopes of opening cafes, bars and restaurants. This activity has truly begun to change the face of the town, judging by the crowds that now form outside of restaurants like Subo and Bacchus. This revival may in some part be attributed to the Renew Newcastle project, which was initiated in 2008 by broadcaster and arts festival director Marcus Westbury. His plan was to revitalise the city by bringing in more artists and craftspeople, which has really helped to boost the creativity and culture in the city core. Aside from the amazing beaches and quiet pace of life, Newcastle is also attractive to would-be business owners because of its affordability. Lower rents have made it easier to establish cafes or restaurants, especially when the locals help out, which is what Chris Johnston, the owner of Suspension Espresso, has experienced. Loyal customers actually started bringing in cafe furniture like chairs, lamps and tables to help him get established.
