Mobile Cafe Pioneer Loves Job and Makes Great Coffee

Of all the popular food trucks appearing in Melbourne, none have seen as much success as Michael Ibrahim’s Soul Kitchen mobile cafe. Over the last decade, Ibrahim has made quite a name for himself serving coffee out of his customised 1971 VW Kombi van in a fantastic spot near the Arts Centre on St Kilda Road. Ibrahim’s business has been growing steadily over the years, but according to him the mobile food scene has yet to really take off. “The shift is happening. I’ve seen the scene change rapidly in the last few years,” he said. “In the past, Melbourne’s relatively small population and strong cafe and pub scene made it difficult for food trucks to gain traction. But now this is all changing, and I predict the next two years is going to go off.” For now, Ibrahim is happy to enjoy the freedom his job brings and continue to have fun interacting with his diverse customers as they sit at his portable and unique cafe tables. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said. “I love it too much.”
