Good Quality Coffee Finally Reaches Paris, Starts a Revolution

In Paris there is plenty of hip cafe culture, but there is a serious lack of coffee culture. Up until 2005, the city was well known for having less-than-amazing coffee, a fact that can be blamed on big suppliers like Cafés Richard, which had cornered the coffee bean market in Paris for a long time — and not necessarily with good coffee beans. Gloria Montenegro, having grown up in Guatemala, knows good coffee and kick-started a Paris coffee revolution by opening La Caféothèque in 2005, which became a Mecca for coffee lovers. Five years later, the next wave of cafes began to emerge, driven mainly by baristas who were passionate to make a good cup of coffee. Ex-New Yorker Merce Muse soon opened up a funky East Village-style coffeehouse in Paris. Furnished with mismatched cafe furniture and flea market treasures, the cafe has a laid-back vibe and plenty of fabulous coffee. It wasn’t long after when more amazing cafes flooded the scene, as more and more Parisians began to wise up to the benefits of good quality coffee.
