Café’s Ban on Prams Stirs Up Controversy

Coffee purists are rejoicing the efforts of Ralf Rueller, a café owner in the heart of Berlin. In the effort to create a quiet space where coffee connoisseurs could sit in comfortable café chairs and sip their cuppas, he has extended a long list of rules for his brew bar, the Barn Roastery. On the list includes a ban of extra milk, spoons, laptops, dogs, mobile phone ringtones, loud phone calls and “media” (not including newspapers).

Of course, not everyone is so happy about this militant approach to coffee drinking, especially those who oppose the controversial sign that prohibits strollers and prams. According to Marianna Burket-Eulitz, a family policy expert for the Green party, Mr Rueller’s attempts to keep out parents and their babies is a “socially incorrect affront to families”.

Still, Mr Rueller is unapologetic and stands by his decision because he wants his coffee to receive the attention he believes it deserves.
